Ash vs. Evil Dead fires on all cylinders. After so many years had passed since Army of Darkness aka Evil Dead III came out in , it looked like a direct sequel just wasn't going to happen anymore, yet apparently, the Raimi-Campbell gang had been working on one for some time.
According to recent interviews with the show's creators Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, what was first supposed to be a new feature film and the fourth entry in the franchise, over time turned into an idea for a TV-series, and I believe fans will be very happy with the result.
Instead of a 2-hour film for a sequel, we now get 5 more hours with Ash and the Deadites possibly more if the show's going to be a success and judging from what I've seen so far, those 5 hours are going to be an absolute blast.
This paragraph contains some — very — mild spoilers; there won't be any in the rest of this review. At the beginning of the show we meet Ash leading a lazy, but apparently happy slacker life, residing in a run-down trailer and working as a stock boy at a Value Stop for some obscure legal reasons, the writers couldn't use the name S-Mart from Army of Darkness' iconic last scene.
In the show, 30 years have passed since Ash's last encounter with the Deadites, and while he might be well into middle age now, he hasn't matured one bit.
Ash is still the exact same guy we last saw fighting walking skeletons and other ghastly undead things in Army of Darkness, cracking wise and appearing as cock-sure of himself as ever despite still not being the "smartest cookie in the jar" - to put it mildly.
These days, he likes to spend most of his spare time either getting wasted in his trailer or picking up random ladies - or both mostly both.
I won't go further into any of the story details because that would only spoil the fun ; suffice to say that his rather irresponsible lifestyle ultimately won't go too well with his duty as keeper of a certain slightly dangerous book, and very!
In my opinion, Ash vs. Evil Dead does everything right. The Deadites are frightening, but they're also kind of comical in that they don't look too realistic don't get me wrong, their make-up is gorgeous, but they don't look like the zombies from George A.
Romero's films or The Walking Dead. The production values in general are absolutely great; the writing is in the vein of the first three films no wonder, since the episodes were mostly written by Sam and Ivan Raimi ; the music, the pacing and the direction: really everything just falls into place.
It's clear that this wasn't some lazy attempt to cash in on the name of a beloved cult-franchise, but a labour of love for all involved. Another great plus of the series is the cast.
Seeing Bruce Campbell step back into this iconic character is simply hilarious fun; it still fits him like a glove or, perhaps more accurately in his case, a chainsaw.
But there was never a doubt in my mind that he would deliver it seems Ash is a character Campbell was born to play ; what really surprised me was how well the rest of the cast fits into the show.
Ray Santiago as Pablo and Dana DeLorenzo as Kelly they're Ash's co-workers at the Value Stop are completely able to hold their own; they are fully fleshed-out characters and just as fun to watch as Ash.
So my verdict: Ash vs Evil dead brings back everything that I loved about the original Evil Dead films, but it also manages to introduce interesting new characters and story lines which help maintain the element of surprise for long-time fans.
And the show works just as well as a stand-alone story, so people unfamiliar with the original trilogy need not worry either: they will find just as much to love here as those who know and cherish Sam Raimi's classics - as long as they have a certain affection for trashy, gory horror comedies and don't expect serious drama Six Feet Under this is not.
In my book, this show is already a winner: 8 stars out of Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show.

Thirty years after his epic battle against the evil Deadites, Ash Williams is living in a trailer park, working in a Value Stop department store, and spending his evenings womanizing in dive bars.
After seeing a demonic visage appear on a woman's face, Ash recalls having a recent Marijuana-addled "poetry read" with a young prostitute, from the Necronomicon , which he still keeps locked in a trunk.
Elsewhere in town, Michigan state police detective Amanda Fisher investigates a disturbance at an abandoned house and encounters Ash's demon-possessed friend who kills her partner.
After defeating the possessed woman, she is then forced to put down her undead partner who attacks her.
Later, Amanda meets the mysterious Ruby Knowby who seems almost too understanding about the horrors Amanda has witnessed.
As more evil happenings occur around him, Ash realizes he unwittingly reawakened the horrible curse again and decides to slip out of town, but he is stopped by his co-workers, Pablo and Kelly, who realize he is to blame for what is going on.
After having to kill his possessed neighbor, Ash reluctantly decides to resume his old chainsaw-wielding persona once again. Michael J. Dominic Dierkes.
Pablo and Ash help Kelly who is worried about a strange call from her father Phil Peleton and the sudden return of her lost mother Mimi Rogers , who was feared dead months ago.
Ash remains suspicious of the mother, believing she is a Deadite impostor. Meanwhile Amanda follows leads that Ash is behind the recent deaths and strange happenings around town, and decides to track him down.
Ash and Pablo arrive at Kelly's father's house to find Kelly's mother acting normal. However, after being provoked at the dinner table by Ash, Kelly's mother reveals herself as a Deadite and kills Kelly's father with a fork.
After a madcap fight between her and Ash, the Deadite tries to convince Kelly that she is fine now, but shows herself again and Ash kills her.
After burying the two bodies, Kelly agrees to accompany Ash and Pablo, and the three drive away. With the mysterious Ruby one step behind them, Ash and his friends seek out Lionel Hawkins Kelson Henderson , the owner of the occult bookstore "Books from Beyond", to find a way to undo the evil curse.
Lionel uses the Necronomicon to summon the demon Eligos Ben Fransham in hopes of compelling it to give the answers Ash seeks. The ceremony goes awry when Amanda arrives to arrest Ash and Eligos escapes the summoning circle.
In all the chaos, Ash does manage to get a cryptic response that the solution to his predicament resides within him. After dealing with the demon, Ash leaves the uncooperative Amanda handcuffed in the bookstore and trapped with a Deadite Lionel.
She is saved however by Ruby, and after learning of her interest in Ash, the two join forces in hunting him down.
Meanwhile Pablo takes Ash to meet his shaman uncle Hemky Madera , a "Brujo", who may be able to help. Along the way, Kelly gets sick and acts strangely, having been unknowingly possessed by Eligos.
Eventually the Brujo gives Ash a drug-induced vision of himself relaxing on a pier in Jacksonville, Florida Ash's idealized vacation spot , where his pet lizard Eli appears and tells him he must bury the Necronomicon deep in the place where everything started — the cabin in the woods.
During the trip, a possessed Kelly attacks Ash. The Eligos-possessed Kelly convinces Pablo and his uncle that Ash is the one possessed.
Elsewhere, Amanda and Ruby close in on Ash by using Ash's severed undead hand to guide them. The Brujo prepares for an exorcism while, back in Ash's trailer, Kelly tries to seduce Pablo and later kill him.
Once the demon reveals himself the Brujo performs the exorcism on Kelly, forcing Eligos to leave, but not before the Brujo is killed. During a funeral for the Brujo, Pablo takes his uncle's sacred medallion.
Back at the trailer, Pablo gives Ash a new mechanical hand that he had been working on. Ruby and Amanda arrive at the Brujo's ranch just having missed Ash, but the charred skeleton of the Brujo emerges from the funeral pyre and confronts Ruby telling her that she will never have the book for herself.
The two fall into the pyre which then explodes. Amanda leaves in Ruby's car but notices Ash's hand has disappeared. On their way to the cabin, Ash, Pablo, and Kelly stop at a roadside diner to meet Lem Peter Feeney , an old militia friend of Ash's, and ask for help in acquiring some weapons.
While Ash tries to scam his way out of paying the diner check, Pablo and Kelly return to the trailer and deal with the Necronomicon which comes alive and reacts to the Brujo's medallion.
Meanwhile, Amanda confronts Ash and arrests him, just as her police chief arrives. Soon, however, the evil Kandarian force attacks the diner, spontaneously turning the police chief and a waitress into Deadites.
Having barely escaped the horror, Lem calls his militia buddies to "arm up" but he is soon attacked by the force himself. Back at the smoldering diner, Amanda agrees to join up with Ash's group.
Ash and his group go to meet the militiamen but find they have been attacked by a demon-possessed Lem. Lem attacks again, and Ash and Amanda become trapped in the militia's bunker with him.
Meanwhile, Kelly and Pablo escape to the woods but the militiamen, thinking the two are government agents and their friend Lem is infected with a government virus, hunt them down.
Back at the Brujo's ranch, Ruby emerges from the funeral pyre unharmed; she goes to the diner and resumes her search for Ash.
Eventually, Pablo and Kelly rescue Ash and Amanda and get the weapons from the militia. Ash unexpectedly vanishes, and his severed hand is seen crawling through the woods toward the cabin.
Armed with his chainsaw, shotgun and the Necronomicon, Ash returns to the sinister cabin after 30 years. He finds Amanda behind him who convinces him that he should not face the evil alone.
Meanwhile, Kelly and Pablo are lost in the woods but find a group of hikers consisting of Brad Ido Drent , his wife Melissa Indiana Evans , and their friend Heather Samara Weaving , who lead them toward the cabin.
At the cabin, Ash is taunted by the severed head of his old girlfriend Linda that he left in the work shed three decades ago.
In the cabin, Amanda listens to the old tape recorder about the Necronomicon. Ash suddenly appears and tells her that they should just leave and be together, but Amanda notices his putrid hand and he attacks her.
She manages to cut off and destroy the hand, but imposter-Ash impales her on the antlers of the deer head in the living room. The real Ash then finds Amanda just before she dies.
After the Mini-Ashes managed to tie the original Ash down, one Mini-Ash sacrificed himself and jumped into the larger Ash's mouth.
Attempting to kill the creature wiggling around in his stomach, Ash proceed to drink from a pot of boiling water, but this only made Ash's situation much worse, as the Mini-Ash began to grow into a normal human size.
Splitting off from the original Ash's right side, this doppelganger, now identified as " Evil Ash ", didn't live for very long, as the original quickly blasted the clone in the face with his Boomstick and dismembered the body with the chainsaw.
Eventually Ash made it to the graveyard and recovered the Necronomicon. After failing to recite the magic words given to him by The Wise Man, Ash accidentally resurrected every corpse in the countryside including his evil clone.
Racing back off to the castle, The Wise Man informed Ash that, although he still can send Ash back to the future, the forces of evil will come for the book eventually.
After initially wanting to run away from this incoming "Army of Darkness" and helplessly watching as the Deadites kidnap Sheila right in front of him, Ash decided to stay and fight against this approaching legion of the undead.
Using books found in the trunk of his car, Ash rallied the locals into helping him create "hi-tech" weaponry such as gunpowder and covering his car into a steam-powered Deathcoaster.
It's not long after this that the army of the dead and Evil Ash arrive outside the castle walls, and the battle begins.
Eventually blowing his doppelganger apart using a bag of gunpowder, and with the assistance of the combined armies of Lord Arthur and Henry The Red, the battle is won and the Necronomicon was protected.
True to his word, The Wise Man created a potion that would put Ash to a deep slumber and "freeze" his body, and would automatically awaken him when back in the proper time.
Saying goodbye to Sheila, Ash rode off from the castle. After using the aforementioned potion given to him by The Wise Man, Ash slept for over years, and eventually awoke back in his own time.
Returning to his hometown of Elk Grove all alone with no friends or sister, Ash attempted to explain to his father what happened at the cabin, but Brock didn't believe the outrageous story.
Word of Ash's story got out presumably from Ash himself, as he often talked about "how he could have been king" to his S-Mart co-workers , and the locals gave him the nickname of "Ashy Slashy".
At some point shortly before getting the nickname of "Ashy Slashy", Ash returned to work at S-Mart, and one day while telling his story to an unimpressed co-worker, a Deadite customer attacked the store.
Ash jumped into action, quickly taking down the Deadite with a Lever-Action Rifle. After this incident, Ash was either fired or quit his job at S-Mart.
One night, with only a few personal belongings, his shotgun, chainsaw, and a Airstream Trailer hooked up to the Delta, Ash left Elk Grove and went into hiding, moving around the state of Michigan from trailer park to trailer park.
There are several factors that could have provoked Ash into leaving Elk Grove, one being that the nickname of "Ashy Slashy" bothered him, another could have been that the Deadite encounter at S-Mart made him realize that if he stayed, evil could easily find him again, and that his own father didn't believe him when he tried explaining about the events at the cabin.
Years passed, and Ash once again returned to a "demon-free" life of drugs, sex, and alcohol. In this time, Ash found employment at ValueStop as a stock boy, and managed to find another copy of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.
Now in the s, more than 30 years since the events at the cabin, Ash accidently awoke the Kandarian Demon once more after getting stoned and reading from the Book of The Dead.
Knowing that he was responsible for keeping evil in check and it was his mess to clean up, Ash along with his new associates in the Deadite-killing business: Pablo Simon Bolivar and Kelly Maxwell went on a journey to stop evil once and for all.
This "road trip" took Ash all over, from occult bookstores , militia camps , Jacksonville , back to Elk Grove , an insane asylum , and to the cabin where everything started twice, in two different time periods.
Perhaps the most shocking of these adventures occurred shortly after Ash had gone back in time to and rewrote history , destroying the cabin before his younger self even got there.
Back in this new "present", Ash discovered that he married a one-night-stand named Candace Barr and conceived a daughter named Brandy , who was now in her teens.
After fighting the giant demon known as Kandar on the streets of Elk Grove using a tank, a dazed Ash was pulled out of the wrecked tank by an unknown individual.
Slowly blacking out, Ash struggled as he was placed in what appeared to be some type of coffin. An unknown period of time passed, and Ash eventually awoke from his slumber to discover that he was in a bunker.
After his awakening, a woman named Lexx approached Ash, giving him a new set of clothes, and opened the bunker doors, showing him that years had gone by, and the world had turned into a post-apocalyptic wasteland ruled by The Dark Ones.
Lexx then showed Ash his Delta, now outfitted with machine guns and a bulldozer scoop on the front. The two hopped in the car and drove into the city, looking for Dark Ones to fight.
While Ash is still a mortal human being, his numerous encounters with the forces of evil have pushed his body to the extreme both as a younger and older man.
Ash uses the same chainsaw that he used to lop off his right hand as a weapon against the forces of evil that attempted to claim his body.
Besides the attachment of a new handle and a metal ring to stick his stump, the red Homelite XL saw has had very little modifications over the years, and Ash has appeared to have taken good care of his signature weapon over the many years it has been in his possession.
A twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington shotgun he picked up at the Knowby's cabin, Ash gave the Boomstick it's nickname while in AD as an attempt to describe his shotgun to the local "primitives".
Besides his trusty Boomstick and chainsaw, Ash has used a variety of other tools to aid him in his war against evil.
In instances where Ash is unable to reach the pull-start handle of his chainsaw, he can simply slide the cord into a small metal "V" shaped clip in his right breast pocket, though more often than not he chooses to pull the handle himself.
It is unknown if Ash created the clip specifically for himself or if it was found somewhere in the cabin.
Ash wears an adjustable leather shotgun holster that wraps around his torso in an "X" shape. Much like the Boomstick itself, it was presumably used by Raymond Knowby for hunting on his property.
After saving her life in his trailer, Ash took Kelly Maxwell's belt to finish attaching the holster to his back. While trapped in AD, Ash constructed a functioning metal prosthetic hand prior to setting out on a quest to retrieve the Necronomicon.
Made of parts of a suit of armor, various springs and a tension release trigger, the gauntlet returned back to the future with Ash, though it disappeared sometime between his 30 years of hiding.
